More information on Croatia

A few helpful details to make planning your Croatia holiday feel effortless.

The best time to visit Croatia is from May to September, when the weather is warm and ideal for enjoying the coastline and islands. July and August are peak summer months with hot temperatures and a lively atmosphere, while May, June and September offer sunshine, warm seas and fewer crowds, making them perfect for a more relaxed and premium experience.

Some Croatian islands are undeniably photogenic, but the best overall experience comes from those that combine beauty with depth, atmosphere and variety:

  • Hvar – famous for nightlife and visuals, but also offers historic towns, quieter inland villages and great dining if you stay beyond the main hotspots
  • Korčula – often considered a more refined alternative to Hvar, with a beautiful old town, vineyards and a more relaxed feel
  • Brač – great all-rounder with beaches (including Zlatni Rat), good value and a mix of activity and downtime
  • Vis – more remote and less developed, ideal for those seeking authenticity, clear waters and a slower pace

If you’re looking beyond the obvious, islands like Mljet (nature-focused, very peaceful) or Šolta (close to Split but far quieter) offer a more understated, premium experience.

Island hopping in Croatia can be excellent, but it depends on how it’s done.

If you try to pack in too many islands using public ferries, it can become time-consuming and fragmented, with check-ins, luggage and schedules eating into your holiday. In that case, a single-centre stay (or a simple twin-centre) often delivers a more relaxed, premium experience.

However, when planned properly, island hopping is one of the best ways to see Croatia. The key is to:

  • Limit it to 2–3 well-connected islands
  • Use private transfers or well-timed ferries
  • Stay 2–4 nights per stop to avoid rushing

For most travellers, the ideal approach is a low-friction multi-centre trip (e.g. Split + Hvar or Dubrovnik + Korčula), which gives you variety without compromising the overall experience.

You don’t need to avoid Croatia’s highlights — you just need to experience them smarter.

  • Travel in May, June or September when the weather is excellent but crowds are significantly lower
  • Stay just outside the busiest old towns (e.g. Lapad or Cavtat instead of Dubrovnik Old Town, quieter areas of Hvar rather than the centre)
  • Visit popular sights early morning or later in the evening, when they’re at their best anyway
  • Balance well-known destinations with lesser-known islands like Vis, Korčula or Šolta

→ The key is timing and micro-location, not skipping the places you actually want to see — that way you still get the highlights, just without the intensity.

The standard of hotels in Croatia is generally very good, but varies more than in some other Mediterranean destinations — so choosing the right property matters.

At the higher end, you can expect:

  • Stylish boutique hotels and modern 4★ and 5★ resorts, often with strong design, great views and excellent locations
  • Facilities like pools, spas, beach access and high-quality restaurants are common in better properties
  • Friendly, professional service and good amenities (Wi-Fi, breakfast, wellness areas) are standard in top-rated hotels

However, there are a few nuances:

  • Star ratings can be less consistent than in destinations like Spain or Portugal
  • Many of the best hotels are smaller, character-led or boutique, rather than large luxury chains
  • In popular areas, some hotels trade heavily on location and views rather than facilities

→ In short: Croatia offers excellent quality, especially in well-chosen 4★ and 5★ hotels, but the difference between an average and a standout stay comes down to hotel selection, location and style — not just star rating.
