More information on Mongolia

A few helpful details to make planning your Mongolia holiday feel effortless.

The best time to visit Mongolia is during the summer months from June to August, when the weather is warm, landscapes are at their most vibrant and travel across the country is easiest. This is the ideal season for exploring the vast steppe, staying in traditional ger camps and experiencing festivals such as the famous Naadam Festival in July.

Spring (May and early June) and early autumn (September) can also be great times to visit. You’ll find fewer tourists, cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery, particularly in September when the landscapes take on golden tones. However, conditions can be less predictable, especially in more remote areas.

Winter (October to April) is extremely cold, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing. While this isn’t the most popular time for general travel, it can appeal to adventurous travellers interested in unique experiences such as eagle hunting festivals or Mongolia’s dramatic frozen landscapes.

In short, for most travellers, June to September offers the best balance of weather, accessibility and unforgettable experiences.

UK passport holders can visit Mongolia visa-free for stays of up to 30 days (this can change, so always check before travel). Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date.

There are no direct flights from the UK, but Mongolia is easily reached via one-stop connections through cities such as Istanbul, Seoul, Beijing or Frankfurt. Most flights arrive into the capital, Ulaanbaatar.

Yes, Mongolia is generally considered a very safe destination, particularly in rural areas. Petty crime can occur in Ulaanbaatar, so usual precautions apply, but travellers are often struck by the country’s welcoming and hospitable nature.

Mongolia has an extreme continental climate. Summers are warm (20–30°C), while winters are extremely cold, often dropping below -20°C. Even in summer, evenings can be cool, especially in the countryside.
