Costa Rica packs more wonder into its small frame than almost anywhere on earth, and this twelve-day self-drive journey is built to seek it out — from Caribbean shores to misty cloud forest to the gold-sand beaches of the Pacific. With the keys in your hand and the open road ahead, you'll travel at your own pace through a country that lives by two simple words: pura vida.
After starting in the capital, San José, you'll plunge into the rainforest along the legendary Pacuare River — ranked among the world's finest whitewater — for two exhilarating days of rafting, with nights at a remote jungle lodge. From there the road leads to the laid-back Caribbean rhythms of Puerto Viejo, a vibrant blend of Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri cultures fringed by white-sand beaches.
At the foot of the near-perfect cone of Arenal Volcano, you'll step beyond the tourist trail for a genuine homestay with the Herrera family — an organic farm tour, a hands-on cooking class, an intercultural exchange with the local community, and a soak in natural volcanic hot springs. The journey then climbs into the ethereal green of Monteverde's cloud forest before winding down to the crescent bay of Samara Beach, one of Costa Rica's most beautiful and relaxed stretches of coast.
Throughout, this is a trip for those who love the water as much as the wild, with rivers, waterfalls, warm springs and two glorious coastlines to plunge into along the way. With characterful lodges, a warm family welcome, free days to explore and the freedom of your own 4WD, the Costa Rica Quest is an invitation to discover this extraordinary country on your own terms.

Costa Rica's capital is among the most cosmopolitan cities in Latin America: its busy downtown is a maze of streets and avenues home to the National Theatre, the National Museum and the Jade Museum, alongside plazas such as Plaza de la Cultura and Parque Morazán. Food lovers can explore the high-quality restaurants of the Barrio Escalante district, or seek out local flavours at the bustling Central Market.

The heart of the trip. The day begins with a warm welcome from the Herrera family at a ranch with a fire pit, where they share the story of their farm — dedicated to agriculture and conservation, with more than thirty lakes for fish farming. After tasting seasonal fruits harvested on site, you'll join a traditional cooking class: grinding and brewing "chorreado" coffee, and grinding corn to press your own tortillas cooked over the fire, served with cheese and guava jam. A gentle 40-minute farm walk follows, passing crops, fruit trees and forest where frogs, iguanas, two- and three-toed sloths and many birds are often seen, before returning for a traditional "casado" lunch. Later, an intercultural exchange with a local community brings Costa Rican dances, traditional games and a friendly football match between locals and visitors, rounded off with a lunch prepared by the community. Finally, unwind in the warm, mineral-rich thermal waters of Termales del Valle, set among primary and secondary forest.

It's a place made for canopy zip-lines, coffee tours and time in nature.

This is an indicative flight based on popular routes. Full flight details will be provided on your holiday quote.

Eleven nights in total: five comfortable 3-star hotels (in San José, Puerto Viejo, Monteverde and Samara), one night at the remote Pacuare River jungle lodge (a "specialty lodge" with full board), and two nights in a genuine family homestay at Finca Los Herrera near Arenal. Most properties are quoted as "or similar," so the exact hotel can vary.
It's an authentic stay with a local farming family, run in partnership with JAZON, a non-profit that helps rural families in Costa Rica's Northern Zone combine farming with tourism. You'll share in farm life — a tour, fruit tasting, a traditional cooking class over the fire — plus an intercultural exchange with the wider community. Breakfast is included; other meals beyond the two activity lunches aren't specified, so it's worth confirming dinner arrangements before you travel.
The quote is for mid-November. Temperatures vary by region and altitude — from around 22°C in the cool Monteverde cloud forest up to around 30°C at Samara Beach — so packing layers is wise. (November sits at the tail end of the green season, so some rain is possible, particularly in the afternoons.)
Optional tours, departure taxes (US$29 per person), any meals not listed above, international airfare, tips, and travel insurance. Travel insurance isn't optional in practice — you'll need a valid policy in place before you travel.
Travel insurance is required before you travel. For visa and vaccination requirements, which depend on your nationality and personal circumstances, we'd point you to the official sources (such as your government's travel advice and a travel health clinic) for the current position rather than advise on those ourselves.
