More information on Japan
A few helpful details to make planning your Japan holiday feel effortless.
The best time to visit Japan depends on what kind of experience you’re after, but overall it’s a year-round destination with distinct seasonal highlights:
Spring (March to May)
This is one of the most popular times to visit, thanks to the famous cherry blossom (sakura) season. Parks and temples come alive with soft pink blooms, and the weather is mild and pleasant—ideal for sightseeing.
Autumn (September to November)
Another standout season, with cooler temperatures and stunning autumn foliage. The vibrant reds, oranges and yellows across gardens and mountains make this a fantastic time for exploring both cities and the countryside.
Summer (June to August)
Early summer brings the rainy season (June), followed by hot and humid weather in July and August. However, it’s also festival season, with lively events, fireworks and cultural celebrations throughout the country.
Winter (December to February)
Perfect for those interested in skiing and snowboarding, particularly in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. Cities like Tokyo and Kyoto are quieter, and you can enjoy crisp weather, fewer crowds and relaxing hot spring (onsen) experiences.
Best overall times:
- March–May (spring) for cherry blossoms and mild weather
- September–November (autumn) for colourful scenery and comfortable temperatures
No – UK passport holders can visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.
For a first trip, 10 to 14 days is ideal. This allows time to experience Tokyo, Kyoto and at least one or two additional destinations such as Hakone (for Mount Fuji) or Osaka.
Absolutely. Japan is incredibly safe, clean and easy to navigate. Teenagers tend to love the mix of futuristic cities (gaming, anime, technology) and unique cultural experiences like samurai history, temples and bullet trains.
Japan offers excellent value for money, especially when compared to other long-haul destinations. While luxury options are available, mid-range hotels, efficient public transport and affordable dining (including high-quality street food) make it accessible.
