Costa Rica is a year-round destination, but the ideal time depends on what you want to do and where you want to go.

Dry Season (Peak Season): December to April

  • Best for beaches, national parks, wildlife spotting, and volcano visits

  • Drier, sunnier days across most regions

  • Perfect for first-time visitors

Green Season (Quieter, Lush): May to November

  • Tropical landscapes at their most vibrant

  • Ideal for nature lovers, surfers, and photographers

Caribbean Coast: Year-Round

The Caribbean side (Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Tortuguero) has a different weather pattern and can be beautiful even when the Pacific side is wet.

Most travellers from the UK, EU, USA, Canada and Australia do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days.
You must have:

  • A passport valid for at least 1 day beyond your arrival (though 6 months is recommended)

  • Proof of onward or return travel

  • Evidence of sufficient funds if requested

The local currency is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC).
However, US dollars are widely accepted in hotels, tours, restaurants and shops.
ATMs are common, and credit/debit cards can be used almost everywhere.

Spanish is the official language.
English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and by guides.
Costa Ricans (“Ticos”) are very welcoming and helpful with communication.
