Crete Holidays

Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, offers a huge variety of holidays. From luxury retreats to beach side apartments to world famous nightlife to active tours and adventures, there really is something for everyone here.

Lying to the south of mainland Crete offers warmer weather than some islands and whilst the main season is between May and October then island remains accessible with the major towns open all year round.

Crete is served by two airports, Chania to the west and Heraklion to the east. There are lots of flights in the summer months from the UK.

There is a huge variety in the amount of accommodation on offer in Crete from 5 star hotels to secluded villas to hostels. There is something for all budgets.

Crete is also an excellent island to explore if you fancied some days away from the beach!

If you'd like to chat through options or would like something extra special please don't hesitate to contact our team.

When to visit Crete?

Most people prefer to visit Crete during the summer months between May and mid October when the weather is warmest and there are plenty of flights available.

The temperatures in July and August can reach well above 30 degrees Celsius and so if heat isn't your idea of paradise then consider May, June, September or October.

Crete is also accessible during the winter months but of course temperatures are lower and the smaller towns and resorts are closed. The higher parts of Crete, the hills and mountains in the South can also become very cold.

The Resorts of Crete

Crete has many  resorts, towns and places to stay.

There are four main areas of Crete each with numerous towns and resorts.

The main town of Chania boasts one of the international airports and the old town is one of the most popular destinations for holiday makers in Crete.

Chania itself has the destinations of:

Aghia Marina

Agloi Apostoloi

Almyrida

Chania

Gerani

Horafakia

Kato Daratso

Kolymbari

Maleme

Nea Kydonia

Platnias

Going east the next destination is Rethymnon area which boasts the destinations:

Sfakai

Further east is the home of the islands second airport, Heraklion which boasts the following destinations:

Hersonissos

and finally, on the east of the island is the area of Lassithi, considered the luxury area including destinations:

How to get to Crete?

There are flights which run direct from many UK airports to Crete during the summers months of May through to October.

Flights also run throughout winter to Chania only and the availability is much reduced with only a handful of flights during the 'off season'.

Upon arrival it is straightforward to find a taxi to take you to your destination or, as many people do, pre-book your airport transfer when booking your Crete holiday.

Currency and Money in Crete

The currency in Crete (and Greece) is the Euro.

Card and cash are accepted pretty much everywhere and cash machines are plentiful.

What to do in Crete

As Crete is a large island there is an awful lot to do aside from beach days.

There are numerous old towns to explore with Rethymnon and Chania being highlights. There are also countless small villages across the islands, far too many to mention, with their own local shops, cafes and things to do.

High on many peoples list is to visit the small island of Spinalonga. The island sits just of the coast from the resort of Elounda and can be reached by a short boat trip. The island has had a pretty turbulent past but is most famous for being a leper colony up until 1957.

If you'd like to see 'old Greece' then a visit to Loutro is a must. There is very little development here and the architecture is untouched. The village is as it almost was over one hundred years ago. This is because there are no roads to the village, it is only accessible by boat or a long hike.

If you're looking for something a bit more active why not enjoy hiking Balos Lagoon. It's a good idea to arrive early if possible to avoid the crowds. The Balos Beach Trail will provide you with the most spectacular views, a gorgeous day out.

Europe's oldest city is said to be Knossos. The bronze age archaeological site boasts stunning fresco's and is well worth a visit for those looking for a little history of Crete.

Another famous hike is the Samaria Gorge. The Samaria Gorge National Park is quite stunning. The 'gates' the gorge are natural rock formations which need to be seen. There are many hiking and walking routes within the park which is quite different to anything on the other islands and much more like the mainland of Greece.

If you like visiting old monastery's then look no further than the Monastery of Arkadi, a 16th centaury wonder nestled in the countryside 23kms from Rethymnon.

These of course are just some of the highlights and there are many, many more.

The Holiday People Financial Protection

At The Holiday People we give you full financial protection.

Simply, when you make a booking your money goes into a sperate business account and stays there until you go on holiday.

Your money is separated from the money we use to run the business. Your money enters into either a Trust Account or Client Account pending what elements of a holiday your booking.

This means that we will always be able to refund and even if, for some reasons The Holiday People failed, you'd be able to get a refund or go on holiday because your money is separated from the business.

The Holiday People offers some of the most comprehensive financial protection in the travel industry. Many travel companies do not offer the protection we do so even if you don't book with us, please do check how you are protected!
