Croatia Family Holidays

Croatia is the prefect family getaway destination

Croatia Family Holidays

Croatia is a wonderful destination for a family holiday. Not only can you find any type of accommodation from boutique self catering to apartments to villas to five star luxury resorts but there are also a amazing choice of areas to stay and explore too. From beach resorts to national parks and even up in the mountains to small islands nestled along the coast.

Croatia is really a summer destination opening from May until mid October. During the winter months many hotels and shops close in the holiday destinations. However, between May and October Croatia is one of the jewels of the Mediterranean.

From Pula in the North to Dubrovnik in the South there are many wonderful areas along the mainland coast or of course the islands themselves such as Brac or the glamorous Hvar. Boat rides are plentiful as are bustling squares with restaurants , cafes and small bars.

The clear waters of the Adriatic are gorgeous as you'll see and will tempt you in for a swim. The beaches can be pebbles but there a number of sandy beaches backed by beautiful pine trees, the setting couldn't be nicer.

There are a number of family specific hotels which run kids clubs and have an all inclusive options as a board basis, perfect for keeping in budget.

With so much to explore, see and do, Croatia will make for a memorable and wonderful family holiday.

When to go?

The best time to visit Croatia for a family holiday is between the months May & October.

It's a great destination for the May half term. Temperatures are usually around 20 and it might be an idea to consider the south of the country near Dubrovnik rather than the north.

July and August are of course busy and you may need to book early to ensure you secure your accommodation.

The winter months are cooler and many places close between November through to February. Flights are also more difficult to come by as the holiday companies and low cost carriers reduce the number of seats to Croatia over all.

Where to stay?

The easiest destination to get to is Dubrovnik which makes Dubrovnik itself and the surrounding area popular. Dubrovnik is easier than other destinations to get to because of the number of flights during the summer months. The airport is also only a twenty minute drive away from the centre of Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik also has the highest number of hotels and accommodations. There are a number of resorts between Dubrovnik and the airport which are a great choice.

If you're heading out to an island you may also depart from Dubrovnik port. Brac and Hvar are around a four hour ferry ride from Dubrovnik, we can help check ferry times of course. Lopud is much closer, only an hour away.

Lopud is a small island and traffic free with a lovely small harbour and a large beach. Well worth checking our for a relaxed family holiday.

If you are heading to Brac or Hvar then if possible we'd recommend flying into Split where the ferry journey to the islands is one hour. Split itself is a wonderful place to stay and a great base from which to explore.

Further north are Zagreb and Pula, also great places to stay. Pula especially is lesser known but has some wonderful beaches, an old town centre and like Split is a great place to explore.

Finally, the islands are also worth checking out. There are many! but Brac may be a great choice. It's now as well known and quieter but it really is wondaful. There is loads to see and explore as well as some fantastic beaches, some of the best in Croatia.

Things to do

There are a lot of things to do and see in Croatia on a family holiday. Here are some ideas:

1. Visit the National Parks. There are a number and so wherever you're staying one will be within striking distance. The most popular are Plitvice National Park, Paklenica National Park and Krka National Park.

2. Visit the islands. Again, there are many from the larger islands like Brac and Hvar to the smaller islands such as Lopud and Vis.

3. Mreznica River Canyon. Offers a great day out for white water rafting and kayaking. There are a lot of reputable companies offering day trips here.

4. Explore Dubrovnik. With the old town, the city walls and the Game of Thrones connection, Dubrovnik is one of the most fun cities to explore in Europe.

5. Boat Trips. There are lots of place to visit by boat but to be honest, just taking a ride on a ferry is great fun itself exploring he islands!

6. Theme Parks. There are a number of theme parks throughout Croatia with most near Dubrovnik. These can make for a good day out for the family but they can become very busy during July and August.

7. Montenegro. If you're staying in Dubrovnik or further south then, if you're feeling adventurous, you could hire a car and nip across the border to Montenegro. The drive is around one hour to the border and from there you can continue to Tivat.

8. Go Hiking. There are lots of trails and walking rotes throughout the country. The mountains offer great days out and are easily accessible from most of the main towns.

The food

Food in Croatia has drastically improved over the past decade. The towns offer an array of cuisine but we'd always recommend trying the local dishes. We'd also recommend seeking out the backstreet pizza cafes. The pizzas tend to be huge and great value for money but they're never on the main tourist trails!

Vegetarian options are plentiful these days and so you'll encounter few problems if you're meat free.

The luxury five star hotels of course offer high end eating and you can find top notch restaurants throughout he larger towns. Again though, we'd really recommend trying some of the local places. It might not be Michelin fine dining but it's great fun, great value and  very tasty!
