Dubrovnik Holidays

Dubrovnik offers a city holiday like no other

Dubrovnik Holidays

One of the worlds most famous and spectacular walled cities Dubrovnik might not be the capital of Croatia but it is the heart.

Dubrovnik sits on the turquoise Adriatic sea, it's walls rising high and circling the pedestrianised fortified old town with an astonishing marble tiled central walk way. You'll discover Baroque churches, narrows winding staircases and medieval features throughout. Then there are the beaches and near by inlets, botanical gardens and the water taxis which are always exciting and provide a treat as you're whisked down to Cavtat for lunch.

Dubrovnik remains the central port for island hopping along the southern coastline and draws thousands of tourists and of course celebrities each year.

A holiday in Dubrovnik is nothing but spectacular. From the accommodation to the port to the food and so much more.

Holiday Season

The holiday season throughout Croatia runs from May until mid October. The months of July and August are very busy coinciding with school summer holidays and can also be on the hotter side with temperatures reaching well above 30 degrees.

The months of May to June and September to October ae quieter and cooler but still warm with temperatures of an average of 25 degrees.

Flights are plentiful from the UK with many low cost carriers serving Dubrovnik airport very regularly in the holiday season. Out of season flights are far fewer and many facilities in Dubrovnik aren't available.

From The Airport To Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik airport sits around 10k (or six miles) south of Dubrovnik centre. The transfer from the airport is quick and takes you along highway 8.

Alternatively, it is possible to take a transfer to Cavtat, near by old and beautiful resort to hop onto a speed boat and arrive in Dubrovnik in style! Please contact our team to find out more.

What to do in Dubrovnik?

There are an awful lot of things to do in and around Dubrovnik so here we've listed some of the most interesting and fun things you might like to try.

1. Walking The City Walls

Without doubt this is the number one item on most peoples list when visiting Dubrovnik and with good reason. The walls were built in the 13th centaury, are 1940 meters long and have six fortresses. They have featured in many films and reference points in literature but perhaps most famously in the TV epic Game of Thrones.

There are many guided tours and we'd recommend booking when you're actually there from one of the local tour companies.

Self guided walks with or without headsets are also available and information points are dotted at many points along the way around.

The walls would prove difficult for any one wheelchair bound or who might have walking difficulties. There are many steps along the way, if you're with young children you may need to carry them at points!

2. Kayaking Trips

Dubrovnik harbour is very sheltered and offers wonderful sea kayaking opportunities. There are a lot of local businesses offering guided kayaking for a few hours or day trips to local islands.

This is a really activity. You don't need any experience but make sure you wear a life jacket and don't book with any business that doesn't make you wear one! There are often double kayaks and we'd always recommend going on guided trips.

3. Lunch in Cavtat

Take a water taxi across the harbour and down the coast to Cavtat. Cavtat is an old town and now boasts boutique hotels with cafes and restaurants lining it's small harbour. Take a stroll around the old town and the gardens adjacent to the harbour before settling in for a long lunch watching people and boast of all sizes cruise by. A wonderful afternoon!

4. The Dubrovnik Cable Car

Take the cable car from Dubrovnik to Srd Hill and the old hilltop fortress. From here you'll experience amazing views of Dubrovnik and on a clear day can see for almost 40 miles. You can take a walk here, grab lunch and just take in the views.

Here there is also a short hiking trail of 1.2km each way along the spine of the hill from the cable car to Fort Strincjera which also offers wonderful views.

5. The Old Town Squares

Wandering around Dubrovnik you're bound to come across many old squares and buildings of cultural importance such as the Minceta Tower, the Bokar Tower, Dubrovnik Cathedral & Treasurey as well as lots more. Perhaps the most famous square and walk way though is the Stradun of Dubrovnik.

The Stradun or Placa as it is locally known is a pedestrianised walk way where locals and tourists gather in the evenings to watch the wold go by. The white limestone floor gives the walk way a reflective glow making it one if not the most attractive in Europe.

Lined either side with cafes, restaurant's and shopping you can easily lose a few hours here.

6. MOMA Dubrovnik

The museum of modern art of Dubrovnik isn't so well known but we'd highly recommend visiting. Opening at 10:00am daily the museum is walking distance from the old town and often features local and international exhibitions.

7. The Island of Lokum

The small island of Lokum sits just 600 meters off Dubrovnik's coasts and can easily be seen from the walls of the city or the beaches alike. The island is traffic free and offers a lovely walk around the perimeter. The island is covered in trees and offers some wildlife spotting opportunity. You can easily reach by water taxi or by kayak if you're feeling more energetic. Kayaks can be hired by the harbourside.

Where to stay?

Eating in Dubrovnik

There is plenty of choice of what to eat in Dubrovnik and vegetarians are well catered for. Fish features high the menu in Dubrovnik as you might expect but walking around the back streets you'll find many local cafes and pizza places where prices are good. If you fancy a treat there are a number of restaurants which require booking in advance.

Near by

There is much to do near by to Dubrovnik.

Near the top of the list might be a day trip to the old town of Montenegro. It's very straight forward to hire a car and head down highway 8 to the boarder, remember to take your passport! The drive is around 25km and one road. Have fun!

It's also very easy to take day trips to allsorts of places including numerous islands, parks, local beaches, towns and much more. One to check out might be a day trip to Lopud. Lopud is a traffic free island with a wonderful beach and well worth a day out.

Mljet National Park is also near by. Resting on Mljet national park the park boasts numerous nature trails and offers wonderful walks and wildlife spotting opportunities. Boat trips run daily from Dubrovnik harbour.

Cavtat is also a boat ride away and lies south of Dubrovnik. Cavtat is an old town with many boutique hotels and harbour side cafes. Spending an afternoon in Cavtat exploring and wandering the streets is an afternoon well spent.

Getting there

From the UK your best bet is a low cost light (or BA) into Dubrovnik. We'd recommend boking your accommodation first as it is likely to get booked up, during high season (July and August) accommodation can be hard to come by.

Flights are generally plentiful and run regularly.

From landing you can easily book a taxi or of course book one beforehand and be met at the airport, always a nice arrival treat!

Flying time from the UK is 2 hours 40 minutes.

The Holiday People Financial Protection

At The Holiday People we give you full financial protection.

Simply, when you make a booking your money goes into a sperate business account and stays there until you go on holiday.

Your money is separated from the money we use to run the business. Your money enters into either a Trust Account or Client Account pending what elements of a holiday your booking.

This means that we will always be able to refund and even if, for some reasons The Holiday People failed, you'd be able to get a refund or go on holiday because your money is separated from the business.

The Holiday People offers some of the most comprehensive financial protection in the travel industry. Many travel companies do not offer the protection we do so even if you don't book with us, please do check how you are protected!
