Gran Canaria is one of Spain's Canary Islands, sitting in-between Tenerife and Fuerteventura around 200k off the west coast of the West Sahara in Africa. It is an island of beaches and mountains, a paradise in the Atlantic Ocean.
Gran Canaria has long been a favorite holiday destinations for Europeans especially the British and German residents who get away all year round due to the consistently good weather.
It is also worth knowing that Gran Canaria is a world Biosphere reserve promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainability. For those looking for more than the gorgeous beaches, great food and wonderful nightlife then it's a perfect star gazing and hiking destination too.
How to get to Gran Canaria?
Flights from the UK to Gran Canaria run all year round from many UK airports.
Flying time is approximately 4 hours and direct flights are plentiful.
When to go to Gran Canaria?
Gran Canaria is a year round destination due to it's latitude being much lower than mainland Europe and is closer to the equator.
This makes Gran Canaria a great get away during the summer months (although it can get very hot) but also a great choice for some winter sun. December has an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.
Beaches of Gran Canaira
Gran Canaria is an island of beaches! here are some of the best:
Maspalomas
Maspalomas beach is located on the southern side of Gran Canaria, one of the most visited areas in the Canary Islands. The beach is large and you'll find sunbath areas, surfers and quieter spots for nude bathing if you wish. The report of Maspalomas is lively with many hotels and apartments and it's well developed with a huge choice of restaurants and bars.
We'd recommend visiting the old lighthouse here, finished in 1889. The building stands 55 meters tall and has survived the development of the past 140 years.
Las Canteras
Many locals believe this to be a gem of Gran Canaria, a wonderful urban beach. A long stretch of beach not far from the Cruise ship docking area in Las Palmas. Blessed with good year all around this beach act's more like a park to the local population living in Las Palmas and as such has a lovely friendly atmosphere.
Playa Des Ingeles
A huge stretch of sand running from Maspalomas to Playa Des Ingeles this beach is one of the finest on Gran Canaria and throughout the Canary Islands. The beach itself has bene hosting tourists for decades and as a result has many facilities, shops and amenities. It's wide and very family friendly. There is plenty to do here with many activities and although the beach can get busy there is always space to find a spot to relax and enjoy the weather.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is all about the sea. The coast is lined with white hotels and apartments all over looking the Atlantic ocean. This beach lies at the south of Gran Canaria and is a very popular resort being busy year round.
Mogan
Maybe the best family resort and beach on the island. Mogan is small, hidden away with a lovely sheltered beach, perfect for families. Here there is also a wonderful small harbour to wonder around or even hire a boat (some might like to try deep sea fishing!).
Amadores
The one word to describe Amadores is tranquil. Also lying in south Gran Canaria this spot is maybe the most relaxing and most beautiful. Backed by lime coloured cliffs the sea here is calm and the beach sheltered.
Agaete
The smallest of resorts and beaches but that is what gives Agaete it's charm. This is for those who want to get away from the crowds and just blend in with local life, taking it easy and enjoying lovely local food, soaking in the sun and enjoying a full relaxing experience.
Meloneras
The main feature here is a long promenade lined with cafes, bars, hotels, spa's and more. This makes for a lovely walk where at the end you'll find Meloneras beach. A small beach with year round bathing and again perfect for those who'd like to relax.
San Agustin
Another resort on the south of the island, smaller than most this is a relaxing spot. A narrower beach but without losing any charm. A great getaway for a quieter break.
Is the sea warm in Garn Canaria?
The short answer is yes, relatively. The temperature varies between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius with the warmest months being September and October for sea swimming.
