From Athens you can easily get to famous historical sites such as the Acropolis, an impressive ancient wonder sitting on top of a hill overlooking the City, with the Parthenon Temple the most popular tourist attraction and subject of many photo opportunities.

Greece has up to 6,000 Islands, although only about 100 of them are inhabited. They are categorised into the following family groups: cyclades, Eptanisa, Dodecanese, Northern Aegean, Sporades and the saronic gulf.

The most popular in the Cyclades are Santorini and Mykonos. These attract travellers from all over the world, and Island hopping here is enjoyed by many backpackers, especially from Australia and New Zealand. Santorini holidays are very romantic and can make for a great couples retreat. 

Zante and Corfu are in the Eptanisa group, located in the Ionian Sea on the West Coast of mainland Greece. 

One of the largest Islands is Rhodes which is in the Dodecanese Islands complex. This is quite far east and you can actually take a day trip across to Turkey! Rhodes holidays are popular with families, couples and groups of friends. 

Crete doesn’t actually belong to a collection of islands, however it is a very popular holiday destination, attracting visitors from all over Europe. 

As Greece is on the mediterranean sea, it boasts long hot summers with plenty of sunny days. Expect temperatures to be around 30 degrees celsius in the peak of summer (July/August) and even outside of this you can expect temperatures in mid-late 20’s in the months May - June and September - October. 

The winters don’t get too cold either but getting to Greece in winter is much trickier as there are far fewer flights available especially to the smaller islands airports.

There is nothing quite like a fresh greek salad with those delicious tomatoes or grilled fish on a barbeque. The diet doesn’t change across the mainland or islands really with familiar dishes available across the country.

Vegetarian options are plentiful throughout Greece with a high proportion of the menu made up of fruits and vegetables with fresh fish also forming a critical element of many dishes.
