Hvar Holidays

Hvar is probably the most famous island in the Adriatic sea. The glitzy and glamorous image far exceeds most resorts in not just Croatia but the entire Med. The beautiful harbour is often lined with super yachts and the restaurants lined with people watching and mingling with the famous.

Aside from being outrageously beautiful, Hvar has the culture, food and nightlife to go with it. A modern day St Tropez.

The warm nights throughout the summer months walking along side the harbour and exploring the backstreets will make this a very memorable holiday. Be warned, you're going to want to come back again and again.

Where is Hvar?

Hvar sits just south of Brac with the closest mainland city being Split.

Hvar itself is like a beautiful spliter sitting in the Adriatic. The island is 68 kilometers long but only 10 kilometers wide.

When to visit Hvar?

The best time to visit Hvar is much like the rest of Croatia, between May and October with July and August being the warmest months.

Between November and March the island partly shuts down, ferry crossings reduce as do flights into Split and other Croatian cities. The temperatures between these months drop as the seasons move to winter.

We'd recommend visiting any month during May to October.

Is Hvar busy?

Hvar is one of the most popular islands off the Croatian coast. During the summer months tourists flock here and the main towns can become very busy. There are festivals during the summer months to watch out for when visitor numbers rise even further.

However, you can escape the crowds, Havr is a large island and once you leave the main harbour of Stari Grad you'll find things get quieter and a little more relaxed.

About Stari Grad

Stari Grad is the capital and main harbour of Hvar and is your first stop in Hvar. Most people rush to Hvar town once they disembark from the Split ferry crossing but we'd suggest taking your time. Here you'll find the beautiful harbour surrounded by restaurants and huge superyachts often being docked. Just watching them come and go is a lovely way to spend some time.

Stari Grad is a wonderful town to explore, did you know it's one of the oldest towns in Europe?

The streets here are old with lots to see, certainly you'd recommend spending a leisurely day just walking around.

Hvar Town is around 30 mins drive away by car (or 22 kilometres).

Hvar Town

Hvar town is the hub of Hvar island, this is where it all happens, where the hustle and bustle is, where the party reputation comes from. However, it is also very beautiful, it's 13th centaury architecture can easily be missed.

Hvar town hosts around 20,000 visitors per day throughout July and August. With the jet set descending prices can be inflated during the peak holiday weeks but don't let that put you off, there are always good value places to be found.

The main square is where most people head to and with good reason. It is stunning and surrounded by cafes and restaurants, a great place for an afternoon.

From Hvar Town there are also a lot of things to do. Here are some ideas:

1. Cruise the Pakleni Islands

2. Visit the Beaches!

3. Go skinny dipping.....

4. Visit Hvar Fort

5. Explore Hvar Town on foot

6. Hire a VW Beetle and explore Hvar (yes, get out of town)

7. Flako Bar for drinks at sunset

8. People watch at St Stephens Square

Hvar Beaches

The beaches of Hvar are generally rocky with pebbles located in inlets and backed by pine forests. So long as you don't mind pebbles the beaches are wonderful.

There are sandy beaches too. On the north side head to bay Mlaska near Sucuraj whilst on the south side head to beach Cesminica.

The best beaches are, according to popular dmenad:

  • Beach Dubovica.
  • Beach Skala (Sveta Nedjelja)
  • Beach Pokonji dol.
  • Beach Prapatna.
  • Jagodna beach.
  • Beach Malo Zarace.
  • Beach Zucica.
  • Maslenica Beach.
