Majorca Holidays

Majorca Holidays

Majorca is probably the most loved and favourite holiday destination for many UK residents. This Balearics island offers a large variety of beach sides resorts and hotels as well as old fishing villages, mountain retreats and villas as well as the gorgeous old town of Palma.

There is just one airport, Palma, about 20 to 30 mins drive from the city centre. There are usually a hygge number of flights available from the UK from most airports on a daily basis throughout the period May - October. Flying availability decreases during the Autumn and Winter months and the tourist numbers fall but it is still very possible to visit.

Majorca Resorts

Majorca is packed with beautiful villages and places to stay throughout the islands Here is a quick guide to some of the most popular heading East from Palma and around the island.

S’Arenal

El Arenal (or S’Arenal; known locally) is around 15 km from Palma and might be described as a lively beach resort. Here you’ll find lots of bars and restaurants with nightlife which goes on until the early hours. The beach here is backed by palm trees and is very wide with beautiful fine sand. If you’re looking for a mix of beach and nightlife this might be the place for you.

Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera remains very much the feel of a local and traditional fishing village. There is nothing quite like taking a morning stroll down to the seafront and harbour side, watching the catch come in surrounded by the white paint of local houses being bathed in the morning sun.  There is no beach here but as you’d expect, great sea good restaurants.

Porto Colom

A traditional fishing harbour this spot is popular with those from mainland Spain and the local population too.  The deep natural harbour is home to a small fishing fleet with each boat boasting its own landing area.  There some nice beaches here in particular the blue flag Cala Marcal.

Cala D’or

Cala D’or is a quiet village with a lovely harbour and seven small beaches and coves, this is a great choice for a family holiday.

Cala Millor

Is a larger purpose built resort with a huge long golden sand beach which is indeed the main attraction especially for families. The resort is popular with many from Northern Europe and typically the beaches are busy during the day time and restaurants during the evening. As this is a larger resort there are other things to do such as boat trips, the Safari Zoo and cave trips.

Puerto Alcudia

This is one of if not the most popular holiday destinations for families. The long beaches and shallow crystal blue waters make this a wonderful and safe setting for a family holiday. There is a wonderful promenade which runs along the coast line, this is great for morning and evening walks listening to the gentle waves coming in.  Here and on the backstreets you’ll find an array of restaurants and places to eat and drink. It’s well worth exploring.

The report itself is quite large and as a result the choice of accommodation is large with everything from budget to five star hotels.

There is a lot to do here including fishing, golf, day trips, tennis, go karting, cycling trips, water parks and more.

Puerto Pollensa

This is certainly a popular family destination and like many other destinations in Majorca, was once upon a time a fishing village which has transformed into a wonderful holiday spot. Like Alcudia there are wonderful golden sand beaches in a crescent but now backed by mountains meaning you’re protected from the strong winds. The choice of restaurants and bars in this relaxed resort is second to none.

There are actually two beaches here, the commercial beach with its horseshoe shape, golden sands and shallow waters is lovely but if you head north along The Pine Walk you’ll come across a narrow and relaxed beach, quite different to the larger tourist beach.

Here you’ll fine lots to do, just like in Alcudia but you’ll also find more variety in restaurants and places to stay with many more villas and private residences here.

Port De Soller

The quiet destination on the beguiling west coast of Majorca, this is for those who wish to get away from it all. This destination escaped the development of results on the south, east and north because, before the 1990’s it was very tricky oy get to due to the mountain range. A tunnel then opened but by then the major developments had been complete so Soller, remains traditional.

Port de Soller offers a wonderful beach and small harbour as well as being the number one destination for any outdoor activities such as cycling, rock climbing, laying and more.

Port d’Andratx

Located west of Palma at the southern tip of the island Port d’Andrats is once again a traditional village transformed but this is the classiest of the resorts in Majorca. Here is where you’ll find the yachting clubs and film stars with amazing villa’s dotted in the hillside tree lines.

It will come as no surprise that there are many wonderful sea food restaurants here but there is no major beach, just some small coves. Sant Elm and Camp de Mar which are nearby other large beaches with lounges and parasols for hire.

Santa Ponsa

Lying west of Palma, Santa Ponsa has been a favourite holiday resorts for the British for over 40 years. The resort lies in a sheltered cove and boasts a lovely blue flag 500 meter golden beach without the high rises that you'll find in other resorts. The resorts is family friendly but is also very popular with the younger roads and the promenade and nightlife can be lively to say the least.

Magaluf

Famous for parties and the wild nights out of the young this is maybe the most famous (or infamous) resorts in Europe. In recent years the local authorities have begun to take steps to stem the wild nights and rid themselves of the partying reputation. The young are still attracted here and it’ s maybe not a destination for families.

The images is slowly changing with a handful of private beach clubs and a beach side promenade. If you’re 18 - 25 and looking for cheap sun then Magaluf will deliver.

Palma Nova

Sitting next door to Magaluf it is often described as being a quiet neighbour. We’re not sure that's quit right Palma Nova is a lovely place and popular with the younger crowd Magaluf is only a ten minute walk away and whilst the beaches in Palma Nova are wonderful if it’s the nightlife you’re after then you’re a stone throw away.

Palma

Palma is the major city of the Balearic Islands and has a ‘new’ and ‘old’ part. The most famous icon here is the 14th century Cathedral of Santa Maria sitting on the harbour side and can be seen all along the promenade.

There is a lot to do and see in and near Palma. Palma is both a vibrant and traditional city and at the same time with edgy districts and modern cafes mixing with local tradition and quiet corners offering a respite from the hustle of the day.
The best advice we can give is to explore. Palma itself can be explored on foot or you can use the network of buses on a day pass to criss-cross the city and make the most of your time.

Places of note are Mercat de l'Olivar, the Joan Miró Foundation, Bellver Castle and a lot of cafes, boutique stores and small galleries to browse.

There are hotels and places to stay galore. We’d recommend taking a look at your budget and go for location and comfort over anything else. Our team can help find the perfect place for you if needs be.

Time To Visit

Majorca is ‘open’ year round but you’ll find some of the smaller resorts in Autumn and Winter. If you’re looking for sun then between May and early October is good with July and August being high season. If you’re looking for a quiet winter city break then Palma is a wonderful choice.
