Split Holidays

Split may be the lesser known city in Croatia when compared with Dubrovnik but this fact should not take anything away from this gorgeous jewel in the Adriatic and of course it is the capital of Croatia.

Split lies further north on the Croatian coast than Dubrovnik but actually is still relatively far south and sits just next to the island of Brac. Split is one of the oldest and most culturally important in Croatia.

The palace of Diocletian, with it's fortified walls and ancient buildings, is one of the most attractive locations in Croatia if not Europe. The fortified walls make a magnificent backdrop for the old harbour lined with restaurants and bars.

Split makes a wonderful city for a long weekend away or longer as a base to explore the nearby islands and mountains. The accommodation available is of wonderful choice from five star luxury hotels to boutique city centre bed and breakfasts.

Where is Split?

Split lies 220km north of Dubrovnik and sits on the Adriatic coast. Flying time from the UK is just over two and a half hours. There are a number of direct flights from UK airports. There are typically more flights from the UK in the summer time during winter.

When is the best time to visit Split?

The months from May to October are warm with temperatures in May averaging 22 degrees Celsius to 30 in July and August.

The winter months are cooler with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees between December and February.

Why visit Split?

There are many good reasons to visit Split not least it is relatively close to the UK, it's great value, the weather is wonderful in during summer and exploring the islands cannot be beaten! Here are some of the main attractions which we believe are great reasons to visit:

1. Relaxing

Split has many old cobbled streets lined with traditional restaurants and bars. Take a seat and relax for the afternoon watching the world go by. Alternatively take an afternoon at your hotel pool before a slow harbour walk and evening cocktail. This will soon become your favorite place!

2. Exploring

From the harbour hop on one of many boats and visit one of many islands for the day. Brac is large and you could easily spend a week exploring! but a day trip is wonderful! Split is backed by mountains with many hiking and walking trails which you might also want to try.

3. The Palace of Diocletian

A roman palace built in the 4th centaury BC but it's not a palace, this is the heart of Split and it's a living city. The 'palace' is filled with shops, bars, restaurants and more. It's easy to forget you're in an ancient palace so pause, take a look up and around you, it's spectacular.

4. Marjan Forest Park

This lush green forest park lies west of Split and rises 178 meters up with the peninsula darting our into the Adriatic. The forest offers hiking and walking trails as well as extraordinary views of Split and the harbour from many lookouts along the way.

5. Klis Fortress

The Klis Fortress is located in the valley leading into Split and once was a defence post to defend the city. The fortress itself was developed over hundreds of years and is long and narrow in it's layout. The fortress featured in the epic hit TV series Game of Thrones as the city Mereen (season 4). There is o course a GoT exhibition. Well worth a visit. You can travel easily from Split, it's 12 km away and a local bus can be boarded or hop into a taxi.

6. The Sea & Activities

There are many activities which can be enjoyed form Split including paddle boarding (even glowing paddleboards during the evening!), a visit to the Blue Lagoon, island tours, swimming tours and much more. Check out the harbour for offers and availability.

7. Krka Waterfalls

You may well have seen pictures of this wonder of nature on Instagram. There are seven waterfalls all coming together in the Krka National Park. The waterfalls themselves are known as Roski Slap and a re wonderful reason to visit Krka.

Visiting Brac Island

Visiting Brac for a day is a wonderful idea or, may we suggest, why not stay for a night or two?

The ferry from Split is a 50 to 60 minutes ride each way with between 3 and  crossings per day from Split harbour into Supetar, the main port and capital of Brac.

The ferry costs 4 to 5 euros per person each way at the time of writing.

Brac has some wonderful old towns, hidden beaches and great walking routes. Please click here to read more.
