Zakynthos Holidays
Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is famed for its crystal clear blue waters and white sand beaches. This very popular holiday island is great for families and for the younger crowds looking for lively nightlife which Zakynthos has in abundance.
Lying west from the mainland Zakynthos sit just south of Kefalonia the island itself is one of the smaller and easily navigable for anyone visiting. Easily accessible in the summer months from the UK, Zakynthos's season runs from May through to October like all Greek islands.
Undoubtedly one of the most famous of all Greek islands due to the shipwreck of 1980 leaving an iconic landmark on Navagio beach which remains a huge attraction for tourists.
How to get to Zakynthos?
From the UK there are many flights from both main and regional airports throughout the months May - October.
Flights are far less frequent if at all from late October through to April. If you wanted to visit Zakynthos during the winter months we'd advise travelling via Athens.
Flying time from the UK is around 4 hours.
Where is the beach with the shipwreck?
The shipwreck from 1980 lies on Navagio beach which is only accessible by boat. There is a viewing area on the cliff tops with a car park near by.
Navagio beach lies on the north west coast of Zakynthos.
Is the nightlife good?
The nightlife for the younger crowd is very good in Zakynthos. From harbour side restaurants to late night bars to clubs open past dawn there is a lot of choice.
If you're just looking for nice restaurants and a back street bar though you're also in the right place.
Zakynthos Turtles
Maybe the main reason people have heard about this wonderful island is because of the Loggerhead Turtles. The turtles eggs hatch between July and August on Laganas beach. It is quite a sight and of course they're very well protected. This is the most important spot in the Med for these beautiful creatures.
Smugglers Cove
Smugglers Cove is a tourist name for Navagio beach, the beach with the shipwreck! Without doubt this is one of the most spectacular beaches not just in Zakynthos but throughout the Med!
For a birds eye view head to the cliff sitting 200 meters above.
Zakynthos Resorts
Zakynthos has a number of resorts catering for all needs, here is a quick overview:
Laganas
Most famous for it's nightlife and 'Ibizaesque' vibe but the beach here is also a huge attraction particularly for the loggerhead turtles.
Alykes
A beautiful coastal small town offering a great beach, restaurants and some nightlife.
Argassi
Argassi is the oldest town on Zakynthos. The resort boasts a large beach and some nightlife. Here you're only a short distance from the capital of the island.
Kalamaki
Kalamaki is the place to go for a relaxing holiday, treats and indulgence. Here the beach is 5km long giving you plenty of space to find a secluded spot. The taverna's here are some of the best on the island the nightlife is slow and relaxing.
Tsilivi
A great family resort with a lovely beach, lots of activities and nice restaurants.
Vassilikos
Vassilikos offers a more traditional Greek holiday with a relaxing and carefree attitude.
Alykanas
There may be no other resort on Zakynthos which is as laid back as Alykanas. There is no nightlife or rowdy bars, a great getaway spot for families.
Tragaki
Tragaki is somewhat isolated and off the beaten track. The pace of life is unsurprisingly slow and this is a quiet getaway however, the lively spots are only a short distance away. Tragaki is a great place for those who would like a mix of peace and nightlife!
Agios Dimitrios
Another remote and 'get away' destination. Agios Dimitrios is a remote village in the hills and central area of Zakynthos. You won't find a quieter spot!
Zakynthos Beaches
The island of Zakynthos offers a wonderful variety of beaches around the glorious coastline. There are moon crescent white sand beaches offering either peace or some water sports. There are hidden coves and pebble beaches whilst glorious pine tree backed beaches too. As Zakynthos isn't a huge island it's great to explore and find the beach for you.
Money in Zakynthos
The currency in Zakynthos (and throughout Greece) is the Euro.
Cash and cards are accepted everywhere and cash machines are easy to come across.
